George Garrett (1929–2008) served as the Poet Laureate of Virginia from 2002 to 2006. The recipient of a 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Library of Virginia and the 2006 Carole Weinstein Poetry Prize, he taught for many years at both Hollins University and the University of Virginia.
