Submit Reviews to AGNI
Under the stewardship of Reviews Editor Rachel Mennies, we’re looking for roughly 1,500-to-3,000-word review essays that lift us to your singular inquiry-driven vantage: show us what your chosen book reveals to you that only you can show. Begin new conversations; bring us along for your investigations. Feel free to submit multi-book reviews that connect the selected works along an idea’s or argument’s through-line (but no round-ups or lists, please). We’re especially interested in considering reviews of literary, small- or university-press books that aren’t being widely reviewed elsewhere, as well as reviews of literature in translation and books by AGNI contributors.
Looking for recent examples? Here’s Abby Minor on Clarice Lispector, Lavinia Liang on Meng Jin, and S. Brook Corfman on Mei-mei Berssenbrugge to get you started—and check out our online archive for more.
Conflict of interest policy: AGNI cares deeply about the integrity of the relationship between reviewer and text. As a result, we generally will not read reviews that consider the work of a reviewer’s friend, colleague, teacher, student, press-mate, or any other significant personal or professional relation. You must disclose to us any such relationship you have with the author(s) under review. Feel free to check in with us if you have questions about this policy.
Galley/author submission policy: We often receive inquiries from presses and book authors hoping for reviews of their books. At this time, we are accepting review submissions and queries only from reviewers themselves; we cannot maintain a list of books to review, or match reviewers with books. Please save paper and postage and email us before putting an ARC in the mail.
Please refer to our submission guidelines for details about our process, reading period, and payment rate (reviews earn the same payment as all other prose). You can submit pitches or completed reviews at any time during our reading period; for pitches, please include links to some of your previously published review-essays. Both reviews and pitches should be submitted through our portal. There is no submission fee for review or pitch submissions. And as always, please let us know if you’re submitting or pitching simultaneously and notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. All reviews will appear online.
We can’t wait to read your work!
