Portrait of René Char

René Char (1907–1988), French poet, was influenced by the surrealists, his love of his native Provence, and his active participation in the French Resistance during World War II. He is known for his economy of style, including his aphorisms and his short bursts of prose. In 2010 Tupelo Press published his collected poems as Stone Lyre, with side-by-side English translations by Nancy Naomi Carlson. (updated 6/2010)
