Diego Isaias Hernández Méndez is a self-taught Maya artist from San Juan la Laguna in the Department of Sololá, Guatemala. He speaks both the language of his birth, Tz’utujil Mayan, and Spanish. His paintings have appeared on the covers of four books, including 13 B’aktun: Mayan Visions of 2012 and Beyond (North Atlantic Books, 2010) and the children’s picture book Trouble Dolls: A Guatemalan Legend (Scholastic, 2000), and he has visited the United States twice for solo exhibitions.
